Of all the Rogue Valley vineyards we work with, Sundown Vineyard consistently yields an opulent style of Syrah that is full bodied and structured, with moderate tannins and generally soft acids. It’s a style that can stand up to a lot of new oak barrel aging, but can also shine perfectly well on its own with no new oak barrels as in this 2016 vintage. Vibrant, ripe fruit aromas of red plum and Marionberry transition to cherry cordial and blueberry pie, highlighting the value of a versatile vineyard. The 40% 3rd fill barrels add integrated toasted oak notes of vanilla and caramel with spicy accents of cedar and sandalwood. A bright, lively entry opens the palate with juicy, forward acidity. Flavors of dark fruit found in plum and fig take the lead with support from herbal sage and floral violet. A long finish is framed with age-worthy tannins and carried with youth preserving acid.
